Children, Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren Welcome Home
Honor Flight Rochester Vets on Father’s Day
ROCHESTER, NY –
Sixty years ago they went to war to ensure freedom would be inherited. This Sunday, Father’s Day, the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Rochester-area World War II veterans will welcome home their heroes when the veterans return from their Honor Flight Rochester trip of June 19 – 20. This is the fourth honor flight trip thisyear and the 10th since the inception of the Honor Flight Rochester hub in July 2008.“The legacy that the WWII veterans have left is the idea of selfless service to our country,” said Kathryn L. Zimmer, Honor Flight Rochester Welcome Home coordinator. “It is something that I keep with me from both of my grandfathers, who were WWII veterans. Our WWII veterans have set the bar high and we need to keep close to our hearts the lesson they have taught us about helping others who need our help without the thought of receiving recognition.”
Veterans are expected to arrive at the Greater Rochester MonroeCounty International Airport at 11:30 a.m. Sunday June 20 at Concourse A. There a flag-waving crowd will greet them. A reception with an honor guard, bands, and speakers will follow immediately in the International Room. “Our welcome home celebrations are always emotional for our Honor Flight Rochester veterans. We've invited the veterans' children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to be our special guests for this home coming celebration that coincides with Father's Day. It should make for some unique reunions,” said Zimmer

The two-day trip is free to all World War II veterans and also to veterans of any era who suffer a terminal illness. Veterans fly FREE thanks to generous donations from people and organizations in Western New York. Plans are under to fund additional Honor Flights in the fall of 2010.
